Twenty years ago former Vice President Dan Quayle was the butt of jokes from just about everyone in the press for gaffes such as his telling a young New Jersey boy to add an “e” at the end of potato.

The liberal elites similarly skewered Quayle for chastising the TV character “Murphy Brown” for being shown having a child out of wedlock, wasting barrels of ink in the process. Quayle blurred the barrier between fantasy and reality, they said.

“What a waste it is to lose one’s mind. Or not to have a mind is being very wasteful. How true that is,” Quayle said addressing the United Negro College Fund in a 1991 speech.

All of these remarks left an indelible blot on Quayle’s reputation.

But fast forward to 2012 to the Internet age, we find the same characters who made Quayle out to be the “dunce” from hell noticeably silent about the current Vice President, Joe Biden.

Democrats and their allies in the press would have destroyed Quayle had he told a wheelchair-bound state Senator to stand up. Insensitivity to the “physically challenged” they would have howled, but they are noticeably silent when it comes to Biden.

“Stand up Chuck,” Biden said on the campaign trail in 2008, but Chuck was paralyzed in a wheelchair. “What am I talking about? Well, I tell you stand up for Chuck.”

Biden’s gaffe montage resembles that of former Vice President Quayle who frequently was caught in the press with his tongue tied.

Quayle’s successor has been a gift that keeps on giving from calling Barack Obama “Barack America” when he was introduced as his running mate in 2008 to his saying he admired Indian-Americans because they work at a lot of Dunkin’ Donuts in Delaware.

“You can’t go to a 7-Eleven or a Dunkin’ Donuts without having a slight Indian accent,” Biden said on the 2008 campaign trail.

Yet in the past week we had the Bumblin’ Joe Biden tell a crowd that Republicans want to put “y’all back in chains” and that we are in the “20th century.”

One could only imagine had Biden had a school student misspell “potato.” Likely, the left would be saying Biden just “says a lot of silly things” rather than deriding him as a stupid dunce the way the did while Quayle was on the national stage.
